The content of this book is beyond criticism, it being a wonderful selection of English poetry. The accompanying history and notes are also interesting and educational. However, it is impossible to navigate to individual poems, or even to the different centuries into which the book is divided. The reader has to start at the beginning and read to the end, which is not the usual way anthologies are meant to be used. This is frustrating.Product details

This anthology is disorganized and is incredibly difficult to navigate. Moreso, the formatting makes it difficult to read many of the poems in their original flow and meter. This purchase was regrettable.
Poets spend their days dreaming,
Lounging
In idle bliss,
A drink in one hand,
A book in the other.
Some would say that we dream
Too much,
That we are lotus-eaters,
But I say we spread our pleasure
And our thoughts
To others who need them more.
Through poetry.
Words,
We do not say much,
And hide behind a shield of paper
When unwelcome strangers pass by and seek
the state of the weather.
But our innermost thoughts,
Our soul-musings
And secret exclamations,
Could astound the world.

and give to others,

We poets catch sparks despite time,

The Pro's of first reviewer are valid. He failed to find any Table of Content but it IS there, location 131 onwards both general for periods, and detailed for poems, and it works.
Paging is not really edited, as in many books, and only because of that I do not give full 5*
I always love reading poetry. With this book, I could easily switch between centuries to find something to new to enjoy. The older the work, the more satisfying it seems to be to finish. I thoroughly enjoy reading the 'tis' and 'thous' of yesteryears and the stories which brought us to our modern English.
Any anthology of this scope is bound to produce quibbles among many readers as to poems that were omitted. The formatting of this book is what deprives it of a fifth star but considering the price and selection there is little to complain about especially for those who are approaching English poetry for the first time.
The table of contents is unmanageable. I still gave it five stars because it is a wonderful collection. Comes complete with notes. Wished the contents were more interactive so that the reader can select a specific poet rather than needing to page through until you get to that poet in particular.
A good sampling of English poetry starting with Tennyson, Browning, Wordsworth, and Keats in the 19th Century and going back to Chaucer in the 14th century. There are some very well-known poems here, but there is also a fair amount of lesser-known work to round it out. As a result, this is not a "Best of" kind of book, but rather a book that attempts to show and give the reader a good sampling of the work being done in each of the time periods. Tennyson's poems "The Lady of Shalott" and "The Brook", for example, are included, while his greatest(in my opinion)poem "Ulysses", is not. A commendable feature of the book is the biographical notes that accompany the poets. These are often quite interesting and help the reader gain valuable insights into some of the poems. Baldwin's language, as well as that of the critics whom he quotes, can sometimes seem a bit stuffy or overly academic, and there were times when I was not sure what was being said and wished it were "in plain English". Overall, however, it is quite accessible.
I read this on my and, similar to other reviews I have read, it was frustrating at times. There are many notes that appear at the end of each section, so I was constantly going back and forth. The book, moreover, begins with the 19th century and ends with the 14th century, but I chose to begin with the 14th century and end with the 19th century, further complicating the navigation. Finally, the biographical notes appear at the end of each section, but it is really beneficial to read them before each section, so I was forever trying to find the biographical notes for each poet and then going back to the poems.
